On my youtube videos I’ve been asked a lot of questions regarding typing. I’m no professional or instructor, I didn’t even pay attention in typing class (nor any other class =D) but maybe my humble advice can help some of you out with your typing speed. I will answer more questions later and post information on my current typing projects in time. If anybody has any other questions don’t be afraid to leave a comment!
Q.AloneR1ns1d3: …. Hai, can i ask u what is the basic for one hand typing?
Thx in advance : )
A: The finger placement for left handed typing is: F – G – H – J. The typing finger placement is basically whatever flows the easiest I suppose, you press the left shift key with your left pinky, your thumb of course stays on the space bar. On the top row, your pinky hits Q – W – E – R. Your ring finger hits T, your middle finger hits Y, and your index finger hits U – I – O – P – [ - ] – \. The same goes for the corresponding keys on the remaining rows. For right handed typing its pretty much the same except flipped around.
Q.romello5kuggz : I just watched the vid you posted 2yrs ago on your 142wpm. i was wondering if it’s not Being too oBnoxious to ask if you can post another one in high def? with a friends cam or maybe you’ve aquired one since the date of the vid? i aspire to crack the 100wpm mark myself. not many ppl i kno can do it. i like your typing style as well. plz dont take n.e.offense at the digital request.
A: No offense taken at all, I’m actually happy you ask. I do plan on uploading a new video here real soon with higher quality to allow for people to see my typing style. I understand that I don’t use the standard finger placement.. maybe this is why I can type so well, and maybe if somebody else finds my typing placement more efficient then the norm I feel the need to let others see exactly how I do it.
Q.BarriosGroupie: omg… do you use your index finger to hit the space bar?
A: Yep, well mostly. I use both index fingers actually depending on whichever one feels better at that moment. Mostly my right index finger, but it depends where my hands are hovering and which one is further up the keyboard then the other. Every once in a while, again — depending where my hands are hovering — I will hit the space bar with one of my thumbs.
Q.BarriosGroupie: you have a very beautiful, artistic way of typing. I can imagine that you wanted to do things right from the very start and didn’t pick up any bad habits.
How long did it take to get to this level and how often did you practice a day?
A: Thanks! And actually when I began typing I never read or took any lessons on it, I began with the typical index finger typing then shortly after I was able to adapt into my own style. I can’t say that I would be slower if I did type properly, though, maybe I would type considerably faster or about the same. When I began using computers I was about 8 or 9 years old and my typing peaked during 8th grade typing class. Of course, my teacher was always lecturing me on my awkward typing style, but I was and currently am that school’s record holder as well as the only student to break the charts in every test taken — the 1 minute, the 2 minute, the 3 minute, and the 5 minute. I traveled across North Dakota to compete in typing tests with older students who were attending these school/college held competitions for various other events. Only once I wasn’t able to get first place, but instead second. It was a cold winter day and my fingers were numbed
Q.Thewii552: You should learn the Dvorak layout. It is much better for your wrists, and you can, a lot of times, type faster after a few months. I am not sure about typing FASTER for you, but you could benefit a lot from it for your hands and wrists. Much less chance of injury
A: I was going to learn Dvorak not too long ago but I wasn’t able to pick the keys off my laptop’s keyboard without breaking them -_- I do plan on learning Dvorak, though, because I have heard from many people that it is in fact safer and faster.
Q.dingoatscritch: you rule, my goal in life is to be the guiness holder for fastest qwertist. 258 so far. typing is like having a woodpecker in my brain, I use a Daskeyboard ultimate S, you? <3 typists. — i love how you’re listening to 3oh3! my favorite band! i type 258wpm, let’s type duel!
A: That’s an awesome goal, and 258 is very impressive O_o. And me, I use any keyboard I can get my hands on
Perhaps we will type duel one of these days, I had plans on creating a new flash game that allowed people to battle it out on the keyboard =D
Q.gXKarma: You don’t use your thumbs.
I don’t want to pick up on your bad habits.
A: I do encourage everybody to learn the proper way of typing or perhaps find your own style that flows well, because we are all unique in our own way and that standard typing style everybody is being told to learn can’t be the best typing style for everybody, if you know what I mean.
Q.p0sn: What game did you play? Im typing to type as fast as you whilst wathcinmty this video tyhis is ahow i turned otu ¬ HAHAHA
A: Diablo II, Warcraft III, CS 1.6, some various other games. I also did a lot of myspace whoring back in the day and was always busy with my keyboard, needless to mention the coding and programming I have done. When I got started on a project or a game I hated spending time trying to figure out where my proper keys are, or having to place my cursor over something then type in order to resume what I was doing. I didn’t like to wait because I had to type something out, so I was always pushing myself trying to get that string of text done as FAST as possible so I could continue what I was doing. Or, of course, when you’re running from a horde of zombies yelling “HALP” in the text box trying to get your teammates to support a little bit, you don’t have the time to sit there and type slowly =D Oh, and if anybody’s a Diablo fan here I just have to mention that I am completely stoked for Diablo III.
